| Message from the Director
Welcome to the Website of the Center for Advanced Separation Technologies. The center was formed in 2001 under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct fundamental research in advanced separation and to develop technologies that can be used to produce coal and minerals in efficient and environmentally acceptable manner. It is a consortium of seven universities that include Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, University of Kentucky, Montana Tech, University of Utah, University of Nevada-Reno, and New Mexico Tech. The consortium brings together a broad spectrum of expertise to solve the various problems facing the U.S. mining industry. The separations research conducted at CAST consists of three broad areas that include: (1) physical separation, (2) chemical and biological separation, and (3) environmental control. The research will be carried out in close cooperation with industry. In August 2002, industry representatives attended a workshop to develop a R&D Roadmap, which identifies and prioritizes research needs in the U.S.
It is hoped that this website provides you with all the information you need regarding the CAST organization. The site is designed to provide information on the expertise of the participating faculty members, specialized equipment and facilities available, annual workshops and short courses, R&D roadmap, constitution and bylaws, request for proposals, ongoing research, non-proprietary reports, etc. If you need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
